Restoring weathered wood the right way
Most grey, weathered decks don't need replacing, they need a proper restoration: a wash to lift dirt and mildew, a brightener to open the grain and neutralize the grey, sanding where boards are furred or splintered, and then a penetrating stain that soaks in rather than sitting on top waiting to peel.
Horizontal surfaces are the hardest test in coatings, snow sits on them all winter, sun bakes them all summer, and docks add water spray from below. We match the product to the exposure: semi-transparent stains that show the grain, solid stains for maximum protection on older wood, and marine-appropriate finishes at the waterline.
Docks are different
A dock finish has to handle wet feet, dragged canoes, ice push in spring, and constant humidity from below. We stain docks in dry weather windows with products rated for ground- and water-contact exposure, and we'll tell you honestly when a dock is better left to weather naturally.

How often should a deck be restained in Muskoka?
Horizontal surfaces typically want a maintenance coat every 2–3 years; verticals like railings last longer. South-facing and lakeside decks weather fastest. An annual rinse and quick inspection stretches the interval.
Semi-transparent or solid stain: which should I choose?
Semi-transparent shows the wood grain and looks best on newer cedar; solid stain behaves more like paint and is the right call for older, patched, or previously solid-stained wood. We'll recommend one honestly after seeing the deck.
When is the best time to stain a deck or dock?
A dry stretch in late spring through early fall, once the wood's moisture content has dropped after the melt. Stain applied to damp wood fails early. It's worth waiting for the right window.
Can you fix a deck that was painted and is now peeling?
Usually, yes: it means stripping or sanding back the failed film, then moving to a penetrating or solid stain system designed for foot traffic. It's more prep, but it breaks the peel-repaint cycle.
