Why coat a concrete floor
Bare concrete never stops working against you. It dusts, it drinks up oil and road salt, it stains the first winter, and it's cold and grey underfoot for the life of the building. An epoxy system bonds to the slab and turns it into one seamless, sealed surface: hot tires, dropped tools, salty slush off the truck, and lake mud tracked in from the dock all wipe off instead of soaking in.
The finish is only as good as what's under it. We diamond-grind the slab so the coating keys into open concrete instead of sitting on a smooth or sealed surface, repair cracks, pits, and spalls, then build up the system: primer, colour or metallic body coat, and a hard-wearing clear topcoat. That grind-and-prime step is the difference between a floor that lasts and a floor that peels in sheets the second spring.
Solid, flake, or metallic
For garages, mudrooms, and workshops, most people choose a solid colour or a decorative flake floor: flake hides dust and tire marks, adds texture underfoot, and reads clean and bright in a space that usually isn't. Both take a slip-resistant additive in the topcoat where floors get wet.
Metallic epoxy is the showpiece option: pigments moved through the coat as it levels, so every floor pours differently, with depth and movement like polished stone or water. It's what you see in salons, showrooms, retail spaces, and finished basements and rec rooms where the floor is meant to be looked at, not just walked on. How long before I can park on a new epoxy floor?
Most systems take light foot traffic within a day and vehicles after roughly three to seven days, depending on the product and temperature. We give you the exact cure schedule for the system we install, and we plan garage work so you're not locked out longer than you need to be.
Will epoxy hold up to Muskoka winters?
Yes, if the prep is right. Road salt, slush, and freeze-thaw are exactly what a sealed floor protects the slab from. The failures you hear about are almost always thin kits rolled over unprepared or damp concrete; a diamond-ground, primed, multi-coat system with a UV-stable topcoat is a different product.
Can you coat an older, cracked garage floor?
Usually. Cracks, pitting, and spalled patches get ground out and filled before priming, and we check the slab for moisture first, because a floor that's wicking water from below needs a moisture-tolerant primer or it isn't a good candidate. We tell you honestly at the estimate.
What's the difference between epoxy and a garage-floor kit?
Thickness and prep. Store kits are a thin, water-based coating rolled over acid-etched concrete; a professional system is diamond-ground, primed, built up in coats, and finished with a much harder topcoat. The kit is cheaper on day one and often peeling by the second season.
